The Pru West District Assembly has successfully organized a two-day hands-on training workshop on Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) within the Prang Area Council. The training formed part of the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to promote improved sanitation and hygiene practices across communities in the district.
The workshop brought together field facilitators and key stakeholders, equipping them with practical skills in community engagement, facilitation, and the implementation of CLTS processes. Participants were taken through key stages of CLTS, including pre-triggering, community entry, rapport building, and the use of effective triggering tools such as community mapping and transect walks.
As part of the field practical, Chainchain was selected as the pilot community for the triggering exercise. The community actively participated in identifying sanitation challenges, particularly issues related to open defecation, and demonstrated strong commitment to change.
A major highlight of the exercise was the immediate construction of a handwashing facility by community members, reflecting increased awareness and ownership of hygiene practices. Natural leaders also emerged from within the community to champion sanitation improvement initiatives.
The training further strengthened participants’ capacity in monitoring and reporting, including the use of household tracking tools and progress reporting systems. Despite minor challenges such as cultural resistance and resource limitations, the overall outcome of the workshop was highly successful.
The Assembly remains committed to sustaining the momentum through continuous follow-ups, community engagement, and intensified public education aimed at achieving open defecation-free (ODF) communities.
This initiative underscores the Assembly’s dedication to improving public health and enhancing the well-being of residents across the district.
