The Pru West District received a major boost in its local poultry development drive following the arrival of 10,000 live birds under the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative.
The birds, which were officially distributed to selected beneficiaries across various communities in the district, are intended to support household poultry farming as part of efforts to improve livelihoods and promote economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
The distribution cuts across a broad spectrum of residents, including youth groups, women, and the elderly, ensuring inclusive participation in the programme. Beneficiaries are expected to rear the birds at the household level, with the aim of generating income, improving nutrition, and building sustainable small-scale agribusiness ventures.
Speaking on the initiative, district officials emphasized that the programme forms part of a wider national strategy to promote poultry production, reduce dependence on imported poultry products, and strengthen local food security. They noted that proper supervision and basic veterinary support will be provided to ensure the successful rearing and survival of the birds.
Residents across the beneficiary communities have widely welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely and impactful initiative that will help reduce unemployment and improve living standards. Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the government and the district assembly, highlighting the opportunity it provides to start or expand small poultry businesses.
Some community members also indicated that the project will go a long way to empower households economically, especially in rural areas where livelihood opportunities are limited.
